It depicts the early travels of explorers and traders as they made their first contact with the natives of the Solomon Islands. Prior to discovery, the Solomon Islands were deep in cultural traditions and the land was unspoiled with vibrant vegetation and wildlife. Solomon Islands are known for their history of cannibalism and headhunting. Hundreds of years ago, the early traders and explorers came into contact with the islanders, as is shown by the boat under sail that emerges between two islands. The face displays the look of apprehension on people's face. The painting shows two islanders that wait on the shore, arms stretched out in welcoming. The chief waits with a bowl, carved traditionally with two natives forming the handles. The background is made up of patterns, with each representing a different island culture.
