| "There is a Solomon Island myth about the sharks that guard the island of Guadalcanal. In pairs, these sharks guard the island and protect it from intruders, but also protect the territory surrounding the island. When the people from a village want to go fishing for bonito, they must pay their respects to the sharks and ask for their permission to fish and their blessing to give them fish from the sea. If they forget to ask for permission, or get too greedy during their fishing, the fishermen will find that their fishing trip will only result in catching bonito heads, not bodies. When people are traveling near the island, the sharks listen to the voices in the boats. If the sharks do not recognize the language of the people, then they will prevent the boat from getting to shore. The only way to trick these sharks is to not speak at all as you pass through their territory." |
